Best Video Games Design Colleges (Part I)

Video games have exploded in popularity and there is a need for designers to match the demand.

Video Games have become part of the livelihood of modern society, both economically and socially. According to research studies, in 2017 the revenue of the Video Game Industry in the U.S. was over $19 billion. This is a huge increase since 2013 when video game sales were just $6 billion annually.

It’s a vast industry, and it’s still growing. Video game rivals the film industry might be the biggest entertainment industry on earth.

Video game designers and developers are in really high demand, and higher education is attempting to meet this demand as more colleges offer Video Game Design and Video Game Art programs. Below are some of the best.

University of Southern California (Los Angeles, CA)

The University of Southern California, (USC), has a long and illustrious link to the entertainment industry. Its closeness to Hollywood is why the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has always picked at least one alumni each year since 1929, the year the academy was established.

University of Utah (Salt Lake City, UT)

There is a reason why big game design companies such as EA Sports call Salt Lake City home. The University of Utah’s Video Game Design program unites art orientated students and more technically minded ones in a program that simulates how real video game design functions. Their students have access to a host of valuable internship opportunities and leave with an experience similar to startup companies.

University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL)

At the University of Central Florida, the school’s Center for Emerging Media hosts The Interactive Entertainment Academy. Getting into the Academy is more difficult in comparison to other creative media programs. Students must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum score of 300 on the GRE, a 3.0 GPA, and a portfolio that displays their game development talent.
